Feature: Okra La Pry / Wreathe

Okra La Pry and Wreathe. Two Leeds based musicians who cover producing, djing and hosting. Both with individual styles of their own, together they form truly original duo. Melodic and futuristic, they reference all kinds of styles which can be heard in their tunes. Look out for these two because with a forward thinking and individual style with skills to match i am sure they are prepared for big movements. I managed to ask them a few questions about how they work together and the music which they make, here is what they said...
When did you start making music together and how did it begin?
W. We started out trying to make a few tunes on Matty's MPC around march or april time. That, er, didn't work out too well to start with. Pretty sure we lost the first 3 or 4 songs we started 'cause we couldn't figure out how to even save them. After a while we moved onto to knocking together some of the software stuff we'd been working on independently and they seemed to blend pretty well.
O. We've finally grasped has to use the MPC now thanks to a bit of internet research and reading through the manual...Old School Hardware compared to software is a hell of a challenge. There's a couple of tunes on there we've been chipping away at that should be done soon.
What influences your music? Is there anything outside of music which you take influence from, e.g. books or films?
O Well....we did a bit of experimenting with a few tracks but Slipstream was the best outcome of the tracks as our influences fused well together, it reminded me of the melodic approach to James Blake and the atmospheric presence with the pops and clicks of Mount Kimbie, one of our other tracks 'Moss' is another example of these blends.
W. Yeah I was definitely trying to bring an atmospheric element to the tunes, I've got a lot of time for the kind of Mount Kimbie / Burial sound.
As far as inspiration outside of music goes, I think we both draw a little from old kung-fu films and the like. The Shogun Assassin films especially. I'm not sure that comes through so much in the tunes we've got finished so far. Its probably more apparent in some of the hardware stuff we've been working on.
How do you go about working on your tunes together?
W. I usually let Matty start the tunes, he's got a different way of making beats than me that have kind of made up the backbone of most of the stuff we've worked on. Once he's got a groove running we jam some chords until we find a progression we're happy with, then I usually take over and add some more percussion and atmospheric layers before mixing it all down.
O. I usually come up with an idea often making a catchy melody and beats. I usually mess around with a rhodes sound then Chris pretty much adds on his trademark style of sounds to mine heavily taking the production even further making our tracks a bit more complete.
What do you see next for yourself in terms of your music? Do you have any up coming spoilers you can give us?
W. We've got a few more tunes we're still finishing off, and I've got a few solo tunes I'm working on with Matty's vocals. We've got quite a few collaborations lined up between us as well.
You can probably catch us around Leeds in the near future. Matty's hosting Absent Minds, Gravel Pit and Reme's Square One Sessions on Roodfm.
